WOOD SCIENCE EDUCATION

A basic understanding of wood science–the study of the properties and manufacture of wood and wood products–is important as a foundation for a new age of manufacturing, construction and design with wood.

Wood Science 101 for Designers (lecture series)

Led by TallWood Design Institute and the Department of Wood Science and Engineering at Oregon State University, Wood Science 101 for Designers is a new lecture series covering the basic properties of wood as they pertain to design. Taught by different faculty experts at Oregon State University and University of Oregon. Topics include:

  • Wood Anatomy
  • Mechanical Properties
  • Acoustics, Air, and Energy Efficiency
  • Mass Timber Manufacturing
  • Thermal Properties and Fire Performance
  • Wood-Water Relations
  • Bio-Deterioration, Durability and Treatments

Wood Based Composite Science Short Course Series (certificate program)

Developed and run by the Wood-Based Composites Center. The Wood-Based Composite Science Short Course series provides career professionals with a fundamental knowledge of wood as an engineering material in the manufacturing of wood-based composites.  Wood science and technology experts, selected from top universities, government research labs, and industry, teach the course’s seven modules:

  1. Wood Structure
  2. Wood and Water Relationships
  3. Applied Statistics and Data Analysis
  4. Wood Adhesion Science and Technology
  5. Strand-based Composite Manufacturing
  6. Practical Wood Adhesives Technology
  7. Structural Plywood and Veneer Based Composite Manufacture

The modules are integrated online and build upon each other to provide a logical progression as participants transfer newly-acquired skills to the workplace. Modules are self-paced and can be started at any time to help you balance your career and other responsibilities.

Each module includes five to 10 hours of instruction. Participants who receive a 70 percent or above on the course final exam will receive a Certificate of Completion.
