Mass Timber
Design/Fab/Build Workshop

 The TDI Mass Timber Design/Fabricate/Build Workshop is a hands-on, small-group workshop dedicated to exploring the opportunities and challenges of designing and building with mass timber, with a focus on the relationship between design, fabrication capabilities, and constructability. 

The three-day program begins with a design exercise, takes participants through the fabrication process, and culminates in the construction of a small mass timber structure. The workshop is led by faculty from University of Oregon (UO), Oregon State University (OSU), and Cal Poly Pomona, as well as industry experts in timber design, fabrication, and construction. DetailsThe workshop allows twelve participants to design, fabricate, and build a mass timber structure over three days. Throughout the workshop, participants will move step-by-step through the development process and ponder industry-wide questions and opportunities. The event is specifically designed for tenure track architecture and engineering faculty. To register, please send an email to evan.schmidt@oregonstate.edu detailing your background and interest. 

Cost: $895 USD

(Note: cost covers materials, breakfast and lunch, equipment use, instructors and guest speakers, and technical support. The cost does not cover transportation to Corvallis or hotels.)

Learning Outcomes

  • Participants will gain practical experience and insight into the capabilities of modern manufacturing equipment and the role such equipment plays in mass timber design and construction. The role of parametric design and advanced CNC fabrication will be explored first-hand to highlight the range of current capabilities and state-of-the-art.
  • Participants will learn important considerations and processes in translating CAD drawings (Rhino or Revit) into industry-standard CAD software (Cadwork) and finally into machine-ready files in order to better inform modeling procedures and interaction between professions.
  • Participants will fabricate and erect their own design, reifying theory through hands-on application. 
  • Participants will learn common mistakes and pitfalls in the process from industry experts, as well as find optimal approaches to designing and modeling for fabrication.

Agenda

Thursday – Design

Topics: Integrating project planning, BIM, parametric design, design for fabrication —  Small teams produce designs for a small pavilion structure incorporating various mass timber products and connections
 

Friday – Fabricate

Topics: Translating drawings for fabrication, sequencing and shipping, limitations and issues, case studies and lessons learned — Create CAD drawings, bring into CAM environment, and fabricate components. Stage components for assembly.

Saturday – Build 

Topics: Mass timber construction, BIM — Assemble the structure, review and analyze the project to identify ways to optimize it. Photo-document and celebrate!

A.A. “Red” Emmerson Advanced Wood Products Laboratory, Corvallis, Oregon

The A.A. “Red” Emmerson Advanced Wood Products Laboratory is home to one of the largest structural testing walls in the country dedicated to timber construction, as well as an advanced manufacturing bay outfitted with a 5-axis CNC, an industrial robot, a custom hydraulic press, and other breakout equipment for production of mass timber specimens. The lab is part of the Oregon Forest Science Complex at Oregon State University’s College of Forestry.
