Certificate Program in Mass Timber Manufacturing and Construction
$500, Full Certificate Program
Register for the Full Certificate Program (all courses)
TallWood Design Institute in collaboration with industry and academic partners has developed a certificate program aimed at building a holistic introduction to mass timber manufacturing, design, and construction. The program is designed for workplace and professional learners looking to deepen their knowledge and skills in today’s evolving mass timber sector. Learn more about the comprehensive certificate programs and click the links for more information.
Key Aspects of Program Design
- The program is modular, meaning participants can either enroll in the full program, or register individually for the courses that are of most interest. ($150 for each individual course, $500 for the full course)
- A certificate of completion is available for individual course and the entire program.
- Courses in the program are delivered asynchronously through Oregon State University’s online learning platform (Canva) to maximize access to those limited by distance or work.
- Courses vary in length, ranging from 20-40 of content, interaction, and study, and are graded pass/no-pass.
Course Descriptions
Intro to Mass Timber Products & Systems
$150
This course provides an overview of the use of mass timber, from manufacturing to installation. Topics include mass timber products and their manufacturing, use of mass timber around the world, and the outlook for mass timber in North America and beyond. This course will prepare students to work with mass timber on all levels of its supply chain, from sustainable forest management to product installation. Further, students will examine the advantages and disadvantages of mass timber at its current manufacturing capacity and mass timber’s role in building a sustainable world.
Intro to Mass Timber Manufacturing
$150
This course provides an introduction to the most common manufacturing processes of mass timber products manufactured around the world, with a special focus on CLT and common veneer-based products. Topics range from wood anatomy to lumber grading and post-processing to prepare students to maximize the benefits of mass timber. Students will learn how raw lumber or roundwood is turned into the base components for mass timber manufacturing and assembled into finished products. Additionally, students will learn how these components and products are graded to ensure the most effective use of material.
Intro to Mass Timber Construction
$150
An introduction to modern mass timber product manufacturing and construction systems. Topics covered include pre-construction planning, mass timber manufacturing and prefabrication, structural systems, managing moisture, and case studies. This course will familiarize certificate recipients with the process of using mass timber in modern construction from the planning to maintenance stages.
Introduction to QA/QC
$150
This course provides a thorough examination of mass timber and the quality checks and assurance that go into its production. Learners of all experience levels will benefit from expert knowledge covering mass timber manufacturing, testing, and certification, and how it differs from traditional wood construction. Topics include mass timber manufacturing, product standards, testing and certification, and basic statistical concepts.
