Innovation in Action: TDI's Research Demo Area at the International Mass Timber Conference

The 2025 International Mass Timber Conference brought together timber professionals from around the globe–and the TallWood Design Institute (TDI) was proud to host a standout feature: the Research Demo Area. This dynamic space offered attendees a hands-on look at cutting-edge mass timber research from Oregon’s leading universities.

Immersive, Informative, and Interactive

Throughout the conference, TDI and our university partners delivered live demonstrations that translated complex research into compelling, real-world applications:

  • Resistance Inspection Drilling
Showcased how researchers assess mass timber durability using minimally invasive tools.

  • Seismic Resilience Testing
Shared insights from OSU’s 6-story shake table triumph, highlighting advances in earthquake-resilient timber systems.

  • Point Support Testing
Demonstrated new approaches to structural support that could expand design possibilities in mass timber.

  • Manufacturing & Robotic Connections
Revealed how applied robotics are transforming timber assembly with enhanced precision and efficiency.
  • Mass Timber Fire Testing
Provided an inside look at ongoing research into fire performance and safety for mass timber buildings.
  • Mass Plywood Panel (MPP) House Prototype
Allowed guests to peer inside the scale model of the first iteration of the MPP Workforce Housing Prototype.

Live Demonstrations Brought Research to Life

The Research Demo Area reflected TDI’s mission to unite research, design, and industry to advance the mass timber sector. From engaging demos to in-depth conversations with researchers, the space fostered connection, curiosity, and collaboration.

Thank you to everyone who visited, asked questions, and explored the future of timber with us. We’re already excited about what next year will bring!
