This research extends the proof of concept from previous work which made mass timber off-cuts into furniture. It enables more intentional use of the material by developing a linked catalogue of furniture designs and component parts that can be adapted to unique off-cut shapes, alongside designing other potential modular product lines.
In previous in-situ infiltration tests of a mass timber building enclosure, the research team noticed air moving between lamellae, at half lap joints, and butt joints in a CLT wall enclosure. The findings inspired this project, which aimed to quantify and compare air infiltration performance of mass timber enclosure joint designs made using CLT and MPP in a lab setting.
A technical team from OSU’s Department of Wood Science and Engineering and School of Civil and Construction Engineering are narrowing down combinations of materials for testing. Proposed solutions include an asphalt topping on the CLT decking, similar to those often used on timber bridge decks.
