Certificate Program in Mass Timber Manufacturing and Construction
The Certificate Program in Mass Timber Manufacturing and Construction is a modular training program in mass timber manufacturing intended to help workplace and professional learners acquire the skills needed to understand and be successful in today’s mass timber manufacturing sector. Most of the course modules are designed primarily with manufacturing businesses in mind, but others involved in the design and construction of mass timber buildings may also find them useful. Many of the courses are web-based or have at least some supporting content online. This is so that as many learners as possible can access the courses without needing to spend long periods away from the workplace. Some modules are available through our community college partners so that driving distances to classroom-based courses are minimized. Participants can take one or more modules based on their individual interests or learning needs or can complete the entire program to earn the Certificate qualification.
What You Will Learn
- Understand the technical characteristics of different mass timber products and the ways they are best used
- Use timber-specific 3D computer-aided design software to produce design documents, shop drawings, renderings, material take-offs, and installation drawings, etc.
- Move design information efficiently between CAD software applications, computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software, and CNC machines
- Become familiar with different kinds of CNC and other machines used in mass timber manufacturing
- Use CNC (computer numerical control) timber processing machines to fabricate beams, columns, and panels and optimize material yield
- Perform quality assurance tests on mass timber products for conformance with product certification standards
- Understand how mass timber construction processes differ from traditional construction projects and know the key elements for efficiency, safety, and success
Key Aspects of Program Design
- Modules vary in length, ranging from 20 to 50 hours of active contact or study time
- The delivery of the program is designed to maximize access to lifelong learners who cannot spend long periods away from the workplace. It includes e-learning components that can be completed at home, and classroom sessions at regional community colleges so that travel distances are minimal
- The program has been designed in close consultation with industry experts to ensure skills and knowledge taught are relevant and up to date
- Some elements of the program are taught in partnership with software providers or machinery manufacturers. Different versions of the same course module, using different software or machinery, may be available in certain areas so that companies can choose the most relevant one for their own operations
- The primary target audience for the program is the emerging mass timber industry. However, other relevant companies such as timber framers, prefab and panelized home manufacturers, and others may wish to enroll in some modules. Undergraduates and graduate students with an interest in mass timber manufacturing may also participate
- Participants can either enroll in the full program (all core courses) to obtain the formal Certificate or register individually for the modules that are of most interest
