Mikhail Gershfeld, Senior Advisor
Mikhail Gershfeld, is a Practice Professor at California State Polytechnic University (Cal Poly Pomona), licensed structural engineer in State of California, and Senior Adviser for TALLWOOD Design Institute. He has over three decades of experience in structural consulting, manufacturing and academia. He is an engineer of record for over 750 institutional, commercial and industrial buildings in Southern California (city halls, schools, hospitals, churches, shopping centers, banks and etc.) He has taught structural design courses in Cal Poly Civil Engineering graduate and undergraduate programs for over a decade. His present focus is in on design of light-frame and mass timber wood structures, and interdisciplinary engineering education. He has taught Architectural Engineering Studios and consulted for Architectural Studios at Cal Poly Pomona and University of Oregon. He is Past Chair of ASCE/SEI Wood Education Committee, past vice -chair of SEAOSC Seismology Committee, member of ASCE and EERI, Reviewer for various academic journals including: Journal of Performance of Constructed Facilities, Journal of Structural Engineering and Journal of Mathematics and Architecture. He has published and presented at ASEE, SEAOSC, ASCE/SEI conferences on engineering education, wood education and wood design related topic. He was co-PI of the NEES-Soft research project that investigated retrofit options for “soft-story” buildings; currently a researcher in NIST funded Center of Excellence for Risk-based Community Resiliency Planning; and serves on the California State Advisory Board of Joint Institute of Wood Innovation.
