The TallWood Design Institute is offering its inaugural Mass Timber Intensive Summer Design-Build Workshop on June 24-30, 2018. This workshop will provide a unique, comprehensive grounding in mass timber design and construction for architects, structural engineers and construction professionals. Over an intensive seven days, participants will experience small-group presentations and discussions on mass timber manufacturing and various aspects of structural wood product performance from our research faculty at OSU Wood Science and Engineering, Civil and Construction Engineering, and University of Oregon Department of Architecture. They will take a tour of a working forest to learn about what sustainable forestry entails, and will also visit timber product manufacturing facilities and mass timber buildings, guided by the people who designed the buildings and make the products. Panel presentations about recent mass timber projects will feature integrated teams of architects, engineers, construction managers, and timber fabricators so that participants can gain insights from the real-world experiences of these pioneering practitioners. There is also a strong hands-on component to the workshop. Participants will work in teams to design a small CLT structure, and jointly select a "winning" design to fabricate. The winning design will be brought into the Cadwork software environment and the entire class will then head to Riddle, Oregon, to the DR Johnson CLT manufacturing facility, where the CLT components for the structure will be fabricated on a Hundegger PBA large-format CNC panel processing machine. The final step will be for the group to construct the building and celebrate their handiwork.
